Urban Visitor Signs (UVS)

The Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce has taken over administration of the new UVS System from YTG Department of Highways and Public Works.  The new UVS system is intended to improve the quality and consistency of information directed to visitors traveling through Whitehorse while continuing to allow for an aesthetically pleasing highway signs system within Whitehorse city limits. UVS structures have been erected at both the north and south ends of Whitehorse on the Alaska Highway. We encourage you to take the opportunity to view the new UVS structures.

Existing highway sign owners are permitted to keep their signs, or "grandfather" their signs, until January 1st, 2008 provided their sign remains in good condition but should be aware that if their existing sign location interferes with the placement of the new UVS structures, their sign will be removed by YTG to a new location on the Alaska Highway outside city limits.  For this reason, we encourage existing sign owners to come over to the new UVS system this year.  There is no application fee for current sign owners to switch over to the new UVS format plus they will be given preference for sign location before new applications are considered.

Local businesses wanting to be part of the new UVS System are asked to forward a completed application, including a template of their proposed sign, to the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce.  Please read the application carefully and completely and do not arrange for construction of any signs until your application has been approved.

Businesses applying for a first time sign must pay a $25 non-refundable application fee payable to the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce.  Also, please be aware that all highway signs part of the new UVS System are subject to a $400 annual advertising fee (per sign) beginning January 2007.

Given the space limitations within the Whitehorse city limits, existing billboards belonging to a business will be removed as that business installs a new UVS.  Also, all new applications will be dealt with on a first-come-first-serve basis and may be rejected due to these space limitations.

AFTER JANUARY 2008, ALL EXISTING HIGHWAY SIGNS THAT ARE NOT PART OF THE NEW UVS SYSTEM OR THAT ARE NOT EXEMPT FROM THE NEW UVS REGULATIONS WILL BE PERMANENTLY REMOVED.  With your continued cooperation and support, this program will be a success and a benefit to all Whitehorse businesses and attractions.
