City of Whitehorse

City of Whitehorse.jpg

The City of Whitehorse is dedicated to the design of a safer community for individuals, and the protection of the vulnerable in our society, and to building a positive public awareness to reduce the incidence and fear of crime.

Leisure opportunities for youth provide positive lifestyle choices and alternatives and after School and other recreational programs provide protection for children. The City Bylaw Department works closely with the schools and First Nations by administering education programs. Bylaw officers also are actively involved with community associations and regularly attend their meetings to address any concerns they may have. Summer bicycle patrols provide an excellent opportunity for public safety education while providing a much needed presence in the downtown core, Waterfront and Millennium Trail.

A valued working relationship has been established between Bylaw Services and the Downtown Merchants Association ensuring that maintenance and other public safety concerns are being addressed. The City of Whitehorse has incorporated safer city strategies into its Zoning bylaw. The Zoning bylaw provides for the provision of adequate outdoor lighting for entrances, building perimeters and walkways; clear directional and safety signage; the use of vandalism-resistant materials; adequate provision for waste collection; maintaining good sightlines and restricting vehicular access where appropriate.
