Department of Justice, Government of Yukon

The Department of Justice works in active partnerships to foster healthy and safe communities that are part of a just and peaceful society. The role of the Department of Justice is to work with Yukoners in responding to challenges and opportunities, by administering the justice system, by providing services that contribute to public safety and security and by providing legal services to the Government of Yukon.
The Department of Justice has been working closely with the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce, the RCMP, Youth Justice and the City of Whitehorse over the last year to develop a business crime prevention strategy and actions. Improving safety and reducing crimes against local businesses is an important place to focus our efforts. A safe and vibrant community is important to us all and although it might take time to sort out how to work together, there is great potential in this partnership.
The Department is organized into two divisions: Legal and Regulatory services and Community Justice and Public Safety. Under the Community Justice and Public Safety side, there are two branches:
- Crime Prevention and Policing, with responsibility for:
- crime prevention programs,
- community justice,
- policing and
- Safer Communities and Neighborhoods legislation
- Community and Correctional Services provides programs and services for victims and adult offenders, and has as its primary goal the safe integration of adult offenders into communities as law-abiding citizens. The branch has three units:
- Whitehorse Correctional Centre
- Victim Services / Family Violence Prevention Unit
- Adult Probation
