Youth Justice - Department of Health and Social Services

In Yukon, Youth Justice falls under the umbrella of the Government of Yukon, Health ands Social Services, Family and Children’s Services Branch.
The youth criminal justice system is intended to promote protection of the public by preventing crime. It does this through addressing the circumstances underlying a young person’s behavior, supervising and rehabilitating young persons who commit offences, and reintegrating them into society, and ensuring meaningful consequences for offences.
Youth Justice deals with young persons from 12- to 17-years-of-age on young offender matters under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Canada) and the Young Persons Offences Act (Yukon). This unit works to prevent and reduce the incidence of youth crime, promote health and well-being of youth and their families, deliver safe, secure and culturally sensitive programs in response to youth crime, and promote healthy re-integration of young persons into the community. Services offered include: Youth Probation, Custody Services – Young Offenders Facility, Youth Achievement Centre and the Youth High Risk Treatment Program.
