Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Office
The Safer Communities and Neighborhoods (SCAN) office is now open and can be contacted at 456-SCAN (456-7226).
If you believe:
- that one or more of the following activities are taking place on or near a property in your neighbourhood;
- drug use or drug trafficking
- illegal consumption or sale of alcohol
- use of intoxicants
- prostitution and related activities
- that your neighbourhood is being adversely affected by this activity; and
- that the property is being habitually used for this activity (on a regular basis),
then you can contact the SCAN office and make a confidential complaint.
You will be required to provide your name when contacting the office, but your identity will be kept completely confidential. You will not be required to be involved in any investigative or court proceedings that may result from the complaint.
If there is enough evidence to prove that an activity is occurring, is habitual and is negatively affecting a neighborhood, there is a series of options available to SCAN officials, beginning with efforts to resolve it informally with the property owner. If it is not resolved with informal options, SCAN officials can then apply to the Territorial Court for a Community Safety Order, which will allow for the closure of the property for a period of time.
This legislation empowers Yukoners to have more control and input over crime and safety in their neighborhoods and communities.
