Business Training Fund Background: During the past several years, Yukon’s economic outlook has been improving steadily. The contribution of the private sector to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been growing. We have reached a point where the interest in the north, combined with Yukon’s support for exploration and development in the mining sector and the peripheral business opportunities associated with that mining development, will result in steady increases in our economic output during the next several years. To facilitate this growth, business has had to import trades people, construction workers, retail staff and other expertise that is lacking in Yukon. In 2008, the Department of Education, Advanced Education Branch, created a Labour Market Framework as a strategic approach to dealing with labour market issues. The creation of the Business Training Fund is part of this strategic approach. Purpose: The purpose of the Business Training Fund is to improve access to training and development for employees and potential employees in the business community, and to increase the ability of Yukon residents to benefit from the current economic climate. In addition, by increasing the capacity of employees in the business sector, the economic benefit to businesses will simultaneously be increased by making them better able to compete locally, regionally and nationally. The Business Training Fund was established in December 2011 by the Yukon Government and is administered by the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce through a funding agreement with the Department of Education, Advanced Education Branch.
