Planter Box Program
For the past several years the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Challenge Community Vocational Alternatives and the City of Whitehorse to organize and facilitate the Planter Box Program. The Planter Box Program is a popular program that operates annually from June until the beginning of September (weather permitting).
There are 74 planter boxes in total available for sponsorship by local businesses. Businesses pay a one-time fee and are then permitted to place weatherproof signs on the planter boxes in a manner that does not detract from the beauty of them in exchange for providing space for placement of the planter boxes. The City of Whitehorse donates the man power and equipment to place the planter boxes throughout the city and Challenge Community Vocational Alternatives provides the flowers, manpower and equipment to maintain the planter boxes during the summer season.
This program provides an excellent summer employment opportunity to an individual in our community with a disability by providing them with valuable work experience and the chance to develop skills transferable to future employment. Local businesses also benefit from the Planter Box Program because it allows them to participate in a program that benefits the community and their place of business during the busy tourist season.
The Planter Box Program helps beautify the city of Whitehorse by greatly adding to the aesthetic value of our city and are appreciated by residents and visitors alike. Many people in years past have commented on how the planter boxes make a huge contribution to the beauty of the downtown core.
